Police departments are often among the earliest adopters of new technology products such as drones, facial recognition systems, predictive software, and artificial intelligence. After popularizing AI voice transcription programs, some police departments are now testing a new, more comprehensive tool like ChatGPT, which uses artificial intelligence to automatically generate police reports and was released by Axon.
According to the Associated Press, Axon says Draft One is being described as the latest giant leap toward reducing gun deaths. The company, best known for providing cameras for police, claims that its initial tests will cut an hour of paperwork a day for cops.
Many officers are now “craving” the use of a productive AI tool that supposedly cuts 30-45 minutes off their typical office work, and Axon has fulfilled that need.
Axon says about the benefits of using its new artificial intelligence service:
“(If police officers use this AI service) they can spend more time connecting with the community and taking care of themselves both physically and mentally, resulting in better decisions that lead to less tension in the community.”
How Draft One’s AI service works for police officers
The Draft One service is built with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI platform and works automatically by using police audio recordings with a body-worn camera and uses artificial intelligence to quickly draft reports, the company announced. The reports are “accurately produced from the audio transcript” and are written based on “the underlying Draft One model to avoid speculation or otherwise.” After adding additional key information, officers should verify the accuracy of the report. Also, each report is flagged if AI was involved in writing it.
Noah Spitzer-Williams, director of artificial intelligence products at Axon, claimed that Draft One uses “the same underlying technology as ChatGPT.” The large ChatGPT language model developed by OpenAI has sometimes been criticized for its tendency to provide misleading or incorrect information. However, Spitzer-Williams believes Axon’s proprietary service has features that prevent ChatGPT’s problems. Apparently, the ability to adjust the amount of AI creativity helps Draft One report more realistically and avoid constant delusions.
