Artificial intelligence tools can already imitate people's voices and make deepfake videos from them. Now a new research has shown that imitating people's handwriting is also possible by this powerful technology.
According to Bloomberg, researchers at the Mohammed Bin Zayed School of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi say they have developed a new technology that can mimic a person's handwriting from just a few paragraphs of handwriting.
To do this, the researchers used a transformer model (a type of neural network designed to understand content and meaning in a sequence of data). The MBZUAI team, which introduces itself as the world's first artificial intelligence university, has received a patent for this system from America.
The researchers have not yet published the technology, but their achievement could be an important step in the field. There are already apps that can generate handwriting, but with the help of recent advances in artificial intelligence, it can be done much better.
Mimicking people's handwriting by artificial intelligence can be dangerous
This technology can help those who have lost the ability to write to be able to write again. But at the same time, risks can also be considered for it. Two researchers of this project have stated in an interview that society should be aware and have tools to deal with forgery of documents.
Despite the concerns, the researchers say they plan to implement their research in real-world conditions in the coming months. They are currently looking for business partners. One of the researchers of this research says: “From deciphering doctors' handwriting to creating personalized advertisements, the potential of this achievement is huge.” The system can also be used to generate data that helps AI models better understand handwriting.
This artificial intelligence is currently able to understand English and to some extent French handwriting.
