CEOs of tech giants such as Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman held a meeting with US senators on Wednesday about artificial intelligence, its dramatic progress and how to regulate the technology.
US lawmakers are looking for ways to reduce the risks of artificial intelligence. This technology has received a lot of attention in the past months and not only many users have started using it, but also the investment of companies in this field has increased significantly. In fact, after the launch of the ChatGPT chatbot, the popularity of artificial intelligence-based tools increased significantly.
CEOs of tech giants agree to set rules for artificial intelligence
According to Reuters, more than 60 senators were present in this meeting. They said there was a general consensus at the meeting that artificial intelligence needs government regulation.
Along with the legislators, Elon Musk also says that we need a regulator to ensure the correct and safe use of artificial intelligence:
“It is important for us to have a referee. “A regulator must make sure companies are taking actions that are safe and in the public interest.”
According to Musk, this meeting was a service to humanity and may be recorded in history as an important meeting for the future of humanity. The owner of social network X (formerly Twitter) also confirmed that he described artificial intelligence as a double-edged sword during the meeting.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, said in this meeting that it should interact with artificial intelligence to support its innovations and security protections:
“We are dealing with an emerging technology, there are important values that need to be balanced, and the government is ultimately responsible for doing so. It is better to set this standard by American companies; Because they can work with our government to shape these standards on important issues.”
According to US Senator and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, despite the meeting, there is still a long way to go:
“We are starting to address one of the most important issues facing the next generation, and today we had a great start. However, there is still a long way to go.”
Republican Senator Todd Young, who was one of the hosts of this meeting, said:
“I believe the Senate will get to a point where I think the Judiciary Committees will be ready to begin the process of reviewing AI legislation.”
The upcoming US election is one reason why lawmakers want to make sure AI is safe. In fact, the senators want security guards to deal with dangerous deepfakes that could attack infrastructure or interfere with elections. For this reason, Schumer has announced that the laws should be made before the 2024 US elections.
