X (Twitter) apparently isn’t properly labeling ads on its platform, which could expose it to an FTC investigation. Recently there have been reports of unlabeled ads appearing on X users’ timelines.
According to these reports, Twitter users saw many advertising posts that did not have an “advertisement” tag. These posts can only be recognized as advertisements by clicking on the three-dot menu next to the tweet.
These promotional posts have made users angry and they mistakenly think that these posts belong to accounts they don’t follow. It may also prompt the FTC to investigate further. Nandini Jami of the Check My Ads group posted examples of these untagged ads on her Twitter account and asked X users to report similar examples.
It is not yet clear whether the display of untagged ads is due to technical issues or a new change to Platform X. Twitter’s ad revenue has seen a sharp decline since Elon Musk bought it. Musk has said that the advertising revenue of this company has decreased by about 60%.
Recently, two of Twitter’s top monitoring executives have left the company, which has worried advertisers.
