Microsoft has announced that it will retire Visual Studio for Mac next year, and support for the final version, version 17.6, will end next year.
Since Visual Studio 17 has recently received good support from Microsoft, the company’s new decision seems a bit strange. Its last major update was released in June, which introduced some important features like Hot Exit.
It’s not clear why Microsoft made this decision, but those who use Visual Studio for Mac only have a year to take advantage of it. According to Microsoft, the latest version will be supported until August 31, 2024.
If you are a user of Visual Studio for Mac, Microsoft recommends that you use the C# Dev Kit for Visual Studio Code. Other plugins like .NET MAUI and Unity are also available. Microsoft also says you can run Windows in a VM or use the Microsoft Dev Box, which gives you a cloud-based VM and lets you use legacy tools like Xamarin and F#.
