Elon Musk has predicted that humans will be able to upload their minds into Tesla’s Optimus robot within 20 years. Such progress may transform human identity and the structure of work, but it also raises important ethical questions.
Elon Musk has always embraced futuristic ideas, but his latest prediction sounds more like science fiction than ever. In the recent shareholder meeting of Tesla Company, the billionaire CEO of the company announced that one day humans will be able to upload their minds into Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. According to Musk, the technology to create a digital version of human consciousness, including memories and personality, and transfer it to a robotic body could be ready in less than 20 years.
When one of the attendees asked him if it is possible for Optimus to host human consciousness one day, Musk immediately replied that this is not an immediate issue, but if we talk about the distant future and ask ourselves if it is possible to record an almost complete image of a person’s mind using the Neuralink system and then upload it to the body of an Optimus robot, he believes that such technology will be possible at some point and it will probably take less than 20 years.
According to Elon Musk, in the next 20 years we will be able to upload our minds into Optimus robots and live forever. Neuralink will be able to copy memories and identity into a machine body, but the original consciousness will still remain and be contained within the human form.
Although the idea sounds like something out of an episode of Black Mirror, Musk is dead serious and even more confident than usual about his timeline.
The Optimus robot, first introduced by Tesla in 2021, represents the company’s vision for an ambidextrous, autonomous, humanoid robot designed to perform repetitive or dangerous tasks. Unlike humanoid robots that have an exaggerated human likeness in movies, Optimus has a futuristic design and still looks like a machine.
It is about 1.72 meters tall, weighs about 56 kilograms, and is able to walk, lift objects, and perform everyday human activities, such as moving boxes, assembling parts, or helping around the home.
The brain of this robot is powered by Tesla’s artificial intelligence; The same neural network that guides the self-driving car system of this company. Tesla hopes that over time, Optimus will evolve from an industrial workforce to a home assistant that can safely and naturally interact with humans.
But Musk’s new comments take the concept of this robot far beyond an automated tool. He believes that with the help of Neuralink, one day it will be possible to load what he calls a person’s mental image into Optimus’ body. Musk emphasized that the digital version of the human will not be exactly the same as the original person, as the robot’s body will make differences and the mental image will not be very accurate, but it will probably be close enough that the difference will be small.
Elon Musk then took a more reflective tone and said that man is not even the same person as he was five years ago, because so many things have changed. These words made many people think. Some speculated that perhaps the true path to some kind of digital immortality was being mapped out.
Beyond the mind-loading debate, Musk believes Optimus may be the tipping point for civilization. He has claimed that Tesla’s humanoid robot can help end poverty by changing the way people work. Musk believes that once humanoid robots have the ability to perform manual, repetitive, or difficult tasks, humans can spend their time creating, learning, and innovating instead of trying to survive.
He also said that Tesla’s long-term goal is to make Optimus affordable enough that every household can afford it; A project that he believes may be more important than the automobile industry. If this plan succeeds, robots like Optimus will be able to take over much of the physical work, drastically reducing costs and increasing global productivity.
Summing up his vision, Musk stated that if one day someone wanted to be uploaded into a robot body, it would probably be possible.
Whether such a vision of the future will come true or just another of Musk’s wild dreams remains to be seen. However, his track record, from reusable missiles to electric cars, makes the world listen carefully whenever he speaks.
Right now, Optimus is still learning to walk and perform basic tasks, but if Mask’s prediction is even remotely true, this robot may one day change what it means to be human. This future will be exciting for some and worrisome for others, and it all depends on one’s perspective.
