In recent weeks, Reddit has made changes to its API pricing that have removed many third-party apps from the platform, and now the company plans to force users to pay a fee.
The Reddit iOS app just added an ugly icon that you’ll have to pay to change if you don’t like it. In the new update, the default reddit icon in the iOS version has been changed to an 8-bit pixel art called OrangeRed. Along with this icon, Reddit has offered users custom icon options, all of which are only available to premium users.
Reddit is also offering two free icons for a limited time, neither of which look like the original Reddit logo. Therefore, most icons, including the main icon, require a subscription purchase. The premium version of Reddit costs $5.99 per month or $49.99 per year. However, for iOS users, subscription costs are more expensive: $6.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
This move by Reddit comes as the company has been trying to earn more money by charging app developers in recent weeks. Christian Selig, the developer of the popular Apollo app, has said that Reddit’s API costs his app, which makes about 7 billion API requests per month, more than $20 million a year.
