Snap, the parent company of Gfycat, has announced that it will shut down the GIF database and delete all user content within a few weeks. In the announcement published by this company, it is said that: “The Gfycat platform is being shut down and users can save or delete their Gfycat content by visiting the website www.gfycat.com and logging into their account. After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content will be removed from gfycat.com.”
The news of Gfycat shutting down is no surprise to those who have been using it for the past months. The website Motherboard recently reported that Snap had allowed Gfycat’s security certificates to expire. This meant that Gfycat was temporarily unavailable to most internet users. Before that happened, though, there were still questions about whether anyone was still using Gfycat.
Over the past months and years, there have been reports on Reddit of incomplete uploads and an unresponsive support team. Gfycat’s shutdown reminds us that nothing lasts forever, even if it’s one of the most popular platforms on the internet.
