Qualcomm unveiled the new Snapdragon 4 generation 2 chip. This chip replaces Snapdragon 4 generation 1, which was introduced last year. Thanks to the Snapdragon X61 modem, this processor is the first Snapdragon series chip to support 3GPP Release 16 5G connectivity.
Snapdragon 4 generation 2 is made using 4nm technology, but Qualcomm did not mention the name of its manufacturer. It should be noted that Snapdragon 4 generation 1 was made using TSMC’s 6nm technology.
The new chip has two performance cores with a clock speed of 2.2 GHz and six low-power cores with a speed of 2 GHz. These cores have led to a 10% performance improvement over the 1st generation. The specifications of the Adreno graphics unit of this chip are not mentioned, but it is said that it supports a display with full HD+ resolution at a rate of 120 frames per second.
Snapdragon 4 generation 2 uses faster LPDDR5x RAM and faster UFS 3.1 memory, and in the camera department, it has a dual ISP with a new feature called Multi-Camera Temporal Filtering, which can reduce video noise much better. Gen 2 video capture is limited to 1080p@60fps (and 720p@120fps for slow motion) and supports Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). This chip can support a camera up to 108 megapixels.
The 2nd generation, like the 1st generation, supports Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology, which can charge a battery up to 50% in 15 minutes. In the connection section, it also supports the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard with a speed of up to 5Gbps.
3GPP Release 16 has power saving capabilities that can save battery life. The X61 modem can perform up to 4×4 MIMO and its download and upload speeds reach 2.5Gbps and 900Mbps, respectively.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1, and the first phones equipped with it will arrive in the second half of 2023.
