Artificial intelligence comes to the aid of American soldiers

OpenAI and startup Anduril Industries will work together to develop artificial intelligence models for the security of US soldiers.

OpenAI will develop new artificial intelligence for the Pentagon in collaboration with defense startup Anduril Industries. The purpose of this partnership is to protect US military personnel and counter China’s artificial intelligence.

These companies plan to integrate OpenAI models such as GPT-4o and OpenAI o1 with Anduril systems to improve the defense position of the US military against enemy unmanned systems. This collaboration comes after OpenAI softened its stance on military use of artificial intelligence models.

A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that this contract is in accordance with the company’s rules on defense against unmanned threats and does not include other uses. The partnership will focus on improving technology to identify and shoot down drones that threaten the US military and its allies.

It should be noted that the Pentagon is currently using Anduril’s Roadrunner drone interceptor system to combat micro-UAVs on battlefields around the world.
