US Senator Ron Wyden has revealed that governments have pressured Apple and Google to extract and share user information through push notifications.
By sending a letter to the US Department of Justice, this senator from the state of Oregon has said that the governments are asking Google and Apple to access user information through the service of sending notifications to smartphones. This revelation actually shows us what methods governments use to spy on users.
Senator Wyden did not mention any specific countries, but said that these governments are outside the United States. He said that he has been investigating this matter for about a year. He has asked the US Attorney General to allow Google and Apple to disclose this method of government spying on users.
It should be noted that unlike notifications sent by an application, push notifications must go through Apple and Google servers before they appear on the user's phone. As a result, governments can require these companies to provide them with information related to these notifications.
Senator Wyden called on the Department of Justice to modify or repeal any policies that prevent conversations about spying through notifications. It is not yet clear which countries have made such requests from Apple and Google.
