Sony is apparently planning to equip its next generation Xperia phones with the first digital camera signature technology. This feature will allow users to digitally sign captured images inside the camera and prevent them from being tampered with by others.
First announced by Sony earlier this month, the technology is set to be added to some of the company’s full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the α9 III, α1 and α7S III, via a software update.
Now, a new rumor claims that Sony will bring its digital signature technology to the next-gen Xperia 1 VI and 5 VI phones, which will be introduced in 2024.
The camera’s digital signature technology is actually a way to ensure the authenticity of photos and videos, which is created through a unique encryption key inside the camera. So when a photo or video is captured, the signature is embedded in their file. This signature can then be used to detect whether the image has been tampered with.
Even using this technology, journalists can use it to confirm the authenticity of the photos they take in the field. This technology can also protect images from copyright infringement.
