Motorola is back with the idea of a flexible smartphone and showed off a new concept phone yesterday at the Lenovo Tech World ’23 conference.
The smartphone features an OLED display with an orange chassis on the back. This phone easily bends around the wrist and looks like a bracelet.
Apparently, there is a magnet on the back panel of this phone to keep it securely on the wrist. According to Motorola, this concept phone has an FHD+ resolution across the screen, which measures 6.9 inches in flat mode. When it’s smooth, this phone offers the full Android experience like any other phone.
It should be mentioned that TCL also presented a similar phone in 2019, but it seems that this form factor still has limitations in practical use. For example, it’s unclear how heavy the phones will be or how warm they might get on the wrist. Their price and durability can also be other issues.
The demand for these types of phones may not be high yet. IDC reported in December that foldable phones accounted for only about 1 to 2 percent of the global market. However, IDC expects the folding market to grow rapidly.
