According to researchers, the world's largest iceberg has started to move after 30 years, and this issue can be dangerous for wildlife in various ways.
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, the giant iceberg named A23a was located on the ocean floor for more than three decades and now it has started to move again. The separation of this iceberg from the Antarctic coast happened in 1986, then in Weddell Sea got stuck. This iceberg is 3 times the size of New York City and can threaten different biological species. Researchers announced last year that this iceberg has moved to a small extent. But now it is leaving the Antarctic waters and this issue seems worrying.
The area of the giant iceberg is about 4000 square kilometers and its thickness is 400 meters. In the past, the location of one of the Russian research stations was on this iceberg, and the Russians sought to save their equipment on it after separating this ice giant. Scientists had previously predicted the shrinking and movement of this iceberg from its base.
Currently, there are many icebergs in Antarctica, all of which play an important role in the dynamics of this region. The main reason for the movement of icebergs in this region was temperature changes. Although temperature changes seem to be a natural process, the increase in temperature due to human factors and climate change has accelerated this process.
