In their recent studies, researchers announced that the hair follicle also has a sense of touch and we can feel the processing of touch through the cells of the follicle.
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, the sense of touch as one of the vital components of human perception helps him to interact with the physical world. Mechanoreceptors are specialized nerve cells that can detect mechanical stimuli such as pressure, tension, change of state or vibration. Also, they can convert mechanical stimuli into electrical impulses and send them in the form of electrical signals to the central nervous system of the brain and spinal cord.
Imperial College London researchers announced in new research that hair follicle cells can sense touch. This phenomenon was discovered when investigating cell culture.
Claire Higgins, one of the lead authors of the study and a professor of bioengineering at Imperial College London, said: “The findings of this study are very surprising.” Because we still don’t know why follicle cells play a role in processing light touch. According to him, follicle cells contain many sensory nerves and in our studies we intend to know if they can activate sensory nerves for an unknown mechanism.
The researchers also managed to discover another in this study. They stated that hair follicle cells can release the neurotransmitters serotonin and histamine in response to contact. According to the researchers, this new discovery can be effective in the future to better understand the function of histamine in inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema.
