Video games often tend to move quickly; An approach that seems to result in a poorer experience in many cases. Continuous rewards in various forms and mechanisms drive the player to pursue the next challenge, and there are few games that ask the audience to slow down. This is why fishing games or fishing sections in games look so attractive. Fishing is a test of patience; Something that cannot be achieved by pressure or force. The fish must come to you and you must wait for the right moment. About Fishing, the next work from The Water Museum studio, the maker of Arctic Eggs, demands exactly that kind of patience; Beside that, it is necessary to be prepared to enter dark, strange and unknown waters.
In the very first minutes of the demo version of the game, fishing training is provided; An education that may need more detailed guidance, but is ultimately understandable. Similar to what we’ve seen in Animal Crossing, the target fish touches the bait and prompts the player to react. The main difference here is that the camera moves with the hook into the water and if the fish catches the bait, the player has to guide it towards him. This is done by moving the mouse or using the WASD keys to get the fish into the right position for a successful catch.

This work is a game about fishing, not just a game with fishing in it. Because of this, the mechanics go far beyond a simple minigame and involve physical and tangible interaction. After catching the fish, you take it to a man who appears to be the main character’s grandfather; A character who has a strange and somewhat unpleasant behavior. While the fries are in and it’s raining, he still insists that the tackle box needs to be filled. The player also tries to catch everything possible, until the grandfather teaches a new trick, which is to attach the caught fish to a hook that allows to control and direct its lifeless body. Using this method, the player penetrates deep into a hole; where he encounters a dead body and also a mermaid.
What was described is only the beginning part of About Fishing; The first chapter of a larger experience that draws inspiration from Sega Bass Fishing and Shenmue. A combination that is unexpected but attractive. The signs point to a secret to uncover, fish to catch and, based on the game’s trailer and Steam page, characters to meet in town. It should be said that Arctic Eggs was also a work that worked as strangely and About Fishing also follows a similar path, at least in the short time it has been experienced. The full version of the game is definitely worth a look and can be added to your favorites on Steam right now.
