According to this report, Samsung is not even trying to make a profit from the sale of each Galaxy Z Trifold device at this point. The Korean publication The Bell claims that Samsung is selling this phone, which has just been introduced in South Korea, at a financial loss. The Trifold retails for 3,594,000 won in South Korea, which is roughly the equivalent of $2,500 USD, making it the most expensive phone in Samsung’s lineup by a considerable distance. However, even with this high price, Samsung is losing money on each unit; A topic that raises the question of how the pricing of future generations of trifold phones will be.

Lim Sung-taek, vice president of Samsung Electronics Korea, said at the launch event of the Galaxy Z Trifold that the device is considered a special edition product and is designed so that enthusiasts can experience it instead of being mass-produced. He also mentioned that there have been several challenges, including the price of memory, but his company has made a big decision to achieve this difficult pricing by reducing costs. Currently, the global memory shortage caused by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies has caused critical RAM components to face limited supply.

Although it seems unusual to sell a product with this level of technology and high price at a financial loss, there have been similar examples in the world of luxury technology. For example, some high-end video game consoles have been marketed at a loss in the past, with the argument that over time, as the cost of parts and manufacturing processes decrease, the situation will turn in the manufacturer’s favor, and the company will recoup initial losses in other ways.
