This news was announced at the same time as Snap’s third quarter financial report. The company said revenue from the deal, in which Perplexity will pay Snap $400 million for the merger, is likely to be accretive to the company’s profitability starting in 2026.
In a letter to shareholders, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel also mentioned that Snap could do similar collaborations with other startups active in the field of artificial intelligence.
Like many of its competitors, Snap has been moving toward greater use of generative AI in recent years. This company has a chatbot based on large language models called MyAI, which uses Google’s OpenAI models, and in the future, Perplexity will be added to this list.
The company has also introduced lenses and AI-powered content creation tools that have helped grow Snapchat+ subscriptions.
Spiegel announced the addition of new features based on artificial intelligence to Snapchat. He said the company is working on a new AI-powered video production feature called AI Clips, which will allow content creators to produce short, shareable videos through simple commands. The release date of this feature has not yet been announced. Snap also plans to release a new version of its augmented reality glasses called Specs next year.
