Apple has announced that live translation capability with AirPad will not be available to European users yet. This is apparently due to EU law.
During the unveiling of the AirPad Pro 4 this week, Apple introduced a new feature called Live Translation. Supported by Apple Intelligence, this feature allows users to speak even if they do not have a common language. While many users around the world are eager to try this feature, European users have been removed from the access list.
Users in the European Union do not have access to live translation with AirPad currently
One of Apple’s official website pages has confirmed that live translation capability with AirPad is not available to European users. “Live translation with AirPad is unavailable if you are in the European Union and your Apple account is in the European Union,” Apple said on this page.
Failure to provide this feature for European users is related to EU rules and regulations. Regulations such as AI ACT and Digital Markets ACT prevent Apple from providing this feature in Europe unless specific legal requirements are met.
EU regulators may want to examine live translation capability before public release and evaluate its compliance with privacy laws. It is still unclear when Apple will be able to deliver this feature to European customers, though conversations between Apple and European officials are likely to begin.
Apple’s live translation capability currently supports English (Britain and US), French (French), German, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain), and Apple plans to add Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese languages by the end of the year.
In addition to the AirPad Pro, live translation capability will also work on the AirPad 2 by removing the active noise and the AirPad Pro 2. These models, however, need to be paired with the iPhone supported by Apple Intelligence with iOS 26 or higher.
