A few days after Apple fixed a vital vulnerability in iOS and MacOS operating systems, new details of the security hole have been released. Apple said in a statement that the vulnerability “may have been abused in a very complex attack against specific and targeted people.” It is now clear that the hacker campaign has also exploited another vulnerability in WhatsApp messenger to target its victims more successfully.
According to the Tekranch website, Meta has confirmed that it has fixed a WhatsApp security defect with CVE-2025-55177. The vulnerability in combination with Apple’s security hole with the CVE-2025-43300 ID allowed the attackers to “send a malicious exploit to the victim’s device” and steal user data. The report came after Danca O Carville, head of Amnesty International’s security laboratory, said on X -Social Network that Meta had contacted and warned users who were likely to be targeted.
“Our research shows that a malicious message may be sent to you through WhatsApp and combined with other vulnerabilities in your device’s operating system to endanger the device and its data, including messages,” says the warning message sent to these users. “Although we do not know if your device is infected, we will be cautious about this so that you can take the necessary steps to secure your device and information.”
In his message, Meta has advised users to return their device to factory settings to fully protect themselves. The company has also strongly recommended that users of their WhatsApp operating system and apps always keep up to date. According to Meta, the company has made changes to prevent this particular attack, but the operating system may remain contaminated. It is unclear who was behind the attacks and precisely a few people were affected, but Meta has announced that it has sent a warning for “less than 200”.
