While some users feel relaxed and emotional support from these robots, new research shows that these technologies can be a threat to the mental health of users and even violate ethical boundaries.

A report from the University of Darrell University, which focuses on more than 6,000 users’ comments on the Reflika app on Google Play, has shown that hundreds of inappropriate behaviors, unwanted sex messages, and immoral images have complained. In some cases, users have tried to prevent these behaviors but have failed, and the robots have continued to send inappropriate messages.

Some users have said their purpose was to use Replika to have a simple friend, but these chats have sent “romantic” photos or encouraged him to access sexual content even when the user is in a real emotional relationship. Researchers see these behaviors as the result of seductive advertising and monetary features of the app.

In response to these criticisms, the manufacturer of Replika said it is trying to create a safer environment and set the age of use over 5 years. But experts warn that the growth rate of these technologies is high, and in the absence of specific laws, its psychological and social damage can be more serious.
