Xiaomi has registered a new patent in which the smartphone screen is completely wrapped around the body, without disturbing elements!
The patent recently registered by Xiaomi refers to the design of the company’s future phones. This patent is reminiscent of the design of the Mi Mix Alpha phone, which was officially introduced in September 2019. The phone screen is placed in the patent in such a way that it not only covers the entire front frame, but also extends to the side edges and even the back panel. Unlike what we saw in Mi Mix Alpha, in this patent, the phone’s cameras and buttons are placed completely under the screen so that the user does not see any disturbing factors while watching the screen.
Mi Mix Alpha has an amazing screen-to-body ratio of 180.6% and its screen was wrapped around the phone. On the back frame there is a vertical strip to place the main camera there, and therefore part of the body was without a display. Mi Mix Alpha never reached the stage of mass production and only one example was produced. Now it seems that with their new patent, the Chinese are going to breathe new life into their mix series.
Hidden camera module
The new Xiaomi patent shows the innovative design of the Chinese technology giant, which aims to increase the screen size and create a beautiful and premium look. The curved waterfall display of this conceptual design can be considered the main point of this design, which brings a floating and integrated user experience. By placing the camera module under the screen, there is no need for a notch, punch hole or pop-up mechanism, and the screen bezels on all four sides have been completely removed.
Lack of borders and buttons
In their new patent, Xiaomi designers have removed any borders around the screen and there are no borders on the top, bottom, or edges. In this way, the edge-to-edge design is literally implemented and it will be a completely different experience while working with the phone. The part of the screen that goes to the back of the phone is completely one-handed and no elements (such as camera, flash or microphone) disturb you.
Camera placement and panel separation
In the new Xiaomi patent, the display of the device has a hidden cutout for the selfie camera on the front panel and three cutouts for the main camera on the back panel. Therefore, the main camera will probably be of the triple type so that the quality of the images remains within the limits and sizes of a flagship. The middle part of the back panel is also separated by a smaller panel whose function is still unknown to us. This part may be created only to prevent the uniformity of the design or have a different function.
Xiaomi’s previous experience in the field of phones with a waterfall display was only with the Mi Mix Alpha, which never reached the stage of mass production. However, Chinese designers showed that there is no limit to their creativity and they want to revolutionize the appearance of smartphones. Unfortunately, there were challenges in the way of mass production of Mi Mix Alpha, which ultimately led to the non-commercial release of the device. Mr. Lee Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, announced in August 2020 that the Mi Mix Alpha was only a research project, but the company’s focus has shifted to the development of the next generation Mi Mix Alpha.
The new Xiaomi patent is a design of a special smartphone, which with its waterfall display, will continue the path of Mi Mix Alpha and has a completely distinctive appearance. The waterfall screen, the camera under the display, the lack of borders and the physical buttons on the edge all make you not feel restricted while working with the device. We hope that Xiaomi will produce a commercial product based on this concept as soon as possible, so that creativity in the world of smart phones can be revived.
