After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, Syria has entered a complex phase of political and military developments. This incident has caused a power vacuum in different regions of this country and has forced domestic and foreign actors to compete for the control of these regions.
Türkiye, seeking to secure its borders, has launched a massive military operation against Kurdish forces in northern Syria. These conflicts have aggravated the humanitarian crisis in these areas and provoked international reactions. The Ministry of Defense of Turkey also announced that the armed forces of this country continue to perform their “tasks” in Syria, and if necessary, Turkish forces may be “settled” in other parts of Syria.
On the other hand, Russia’s military presence in Syria, which played an important role in supporting the government during the Assad regime, is in an uncertain situation. There is speculation about the gradual withdrawal of Russian forces and other regional actors trying to fill this power vacuum. However, Moscow insists that it continues to consult with the Syrian authorities and the consultation continues at all levels.
At the same time, the United States has continued to support some Kurdish groups in Syria, adding to the complexity of the equation. These supports have increased tensions between the US and Türkiye, two NATO allies. In general, Syria has become the scene of geopolitical competition and its future is highly dependent on agreements and the balance of power between internal and external actors.
