Professor Geoffrey Hinton, who is considered the godfather of artificial intelligence, has joined Elon Musk’s supporters in opposing the commercialization of OpenAI.
Ever since OpenAI announced its plans to change its structure from non-profit to for-profit, various individuals and organizations have opposed the company’s plans. At the head of these opponents was Elon Musk. However, OpenAI later revealed by publishing emails that Musk was one of the supporters of the company’s for-profit. Conflicts in this field are still ongoing.
The godfather of artificial intelligence is also against the commercialization of OpenAI
The latest person to join the ranks of opponents of the commercialization of OpenAI is Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of artificial intelligence. On Monday, Encode Group, a non-profit youth advocacy organization, announced in a statement its support for Elon Musk’s lawsuit to prevent OpenAI from being commercialized.
The godfather of artificial intelligence said in a statement published by Encode:
“OpenAI was founded explicitly as a non-profit organization with a focus on safety, and made promises related to safety in its charter. This company has used its non-profit status to receive benefits such as taxes and other benefits. “Allowing (OpenAI) to undermine all of this sends a bad signal to the rest of the ecosystem.”
OpenAI currently has many for-profit divisions managed by a non-profit board of directors. This has caused this company to face limitations in its missions. Despite all the opposition, OpenAI appears to be serious about converting from non-profit to for-profit and has even announced its plans to achieve this goal.
Professor Geoffrey Hinton recently pointed out the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence and said that there is a 10-20% probability that artificial intelligence will destroy human intelligence in 30 years. He had previously warned that artificial intelligence could destroy many jobs.
