At the annual meeting of the Society of Radiology held in North America, a group of researchers announced that based on a study conducted with the help of artificial intelligence, the disease was diagnosed in 21% more cases in women who participated in the breast cancer screening program; The findings of this study indicate that artificial intelligence has the ability to work as a second eye for radiologists.
“This is the first report of the results of a program that provides artificial intelligence-enhanced review and patients can choose to register in it.
10 medical centers participated in this study; These medical centers offered a special mammography screening program with artificial intelligence to the patients for a fee.
The work process is such that the results of X-ray tests of women registered in this program were first reviewed by a radiologist and then analyzed by artificial intelligence software. If the results of the two reviews were different, a second radiologist performed the final review.
According to Haslam, the program uses artificial intelligence in an innovative process to ensure women with questionable results receive specialized care that could help detect more breast cancers at an earlier stage. The enrollment rate in this program has now increased by 36% and is still increasing. Likewise, the cases of cancer diagnosis for these women have been significantly higher.
According to the studies, among the 747,604 women who had a mammogram, the cancer diagnosis rate was about 43% higher for those who were enrolled in the program. The researchers observed that this rate was higher in all 10 centers studied, and that 21 percent of the increase was directly attributable to AI performance.
According to the researchers, their positive predictive value for cancer (that is, the probability that positive results actually indicate cancer) was also 15% higher. In other words, the calls made with the help of artificial intelligence were more accurate.
Another DeepHealth researcher and senior author of the study, Gregory Sorensen, said: “These data show that many women are willing to use artificial intelligence to enhance their mammograms, and when artificial intelligence is combined with a “Combine immune screening, more cancers are being detected.”
