OpenAI’s CFO says the company is evaluating the idea of displaying ads on ChatGPT. This idea has been proposed while “Sam Altman”, the CEO of the company, has previously said that he is not interested in advertising in general and will use this mechanism as a last resort.
Sarah Fryer, OpenAI’s chief financial officer, told the Financial Times that the company is exploring the idea of using an advertising business model. The creator of ChatGPT will apparently be “thoughtful” about where and when ads are displayed if this model is implemented.
Fryer has also emphasized in another statement that the company currently has no active plans to pursue an advertising business model. But all in all, OpenAI seems to be on board with the idea, and maybe eventually moving toward it.
Ads may find their way into ChatGPT
The Financial Times says that OpenAI recently hired Shivakumar Venkataraman, who used to work at Google, and who could greatly contribute to the company’s advertising plans.
The creator of ChatGPT has so far used a subscription sales model to monetize its productive AI tools. But the cost of making and presenting these models is very high and an important part of the capital of this company is provided by investors. However, sooner or later OpenAI will have to think about making bigger revenues from its products, and advertising can create a decent revenue stream for them.
However, Sam Altman is not a fan of showing ads. Asked recently at Harvard Business School if OpenAI would use ad serving to make its products more widely available, he said that would be their last resort. “I’m not saying that OpenAI will never consider serving ads, but I’m not into ads in general, and I think that ads plus AI would be an annoying idea for me,” he explained.
