Recruiting a meta manager and focusing OpenAI on hardware
The hiring of Meta’s AR glasses director coincided with OpenAI’s investment in San Francisco-based robotics startup Physical Intelligence. The startup focuses on “bringing versatile AI to the physical world” and aims to do so by developing large-scale AI models and algorithms to power robots.
We generally know OpenAI for its famous chatbot, ChatGPT, but the hiring of Caitlin Kalinowski and an investment in the startup Physical Intelligence show that the company wants to make and sell hardware as well.
Prior to OpenAI, Caitlin Kalinowski was Meta Hardware Director for almost 2 1/2 years and helped create Orion, formerly known as Project Nazare, as “the most advanced AR glasses”. Before leading the Orion project, Kalinowski worked on virtual reality headsets at Oculus Meta for more than nine years; Before that, he worked at Apple for nearly 6 years in the field of MacBook design, including the Pro and Air models.
