A scientific research with the aim of identifying the scariest films in the history of cinema showed that by examining the physiological reactions of the audience when faced with scary works, a more accurate ranking of these works can be achieved.
In this research, the researchers carefully studied the heart rate changes of hundreds of volunteers who were watching different scary movies. Not only the increase in heart rate, but also the time interval between each beat was measured in this research.
The results of this research indicate that the movie “Sinister”, produced in 2012, is considered the scariest movie so far. Viewers of the film, on average, experienced a 34 percent increase in heart rate and a 21 percent reduction in the interval between their heartbeats. Based on these findings, Shoom managed to get a score of 96 out of 100 on a scary scale.
In the list of top 10 horror movies based on this research, titles such as Host, Skinamarink, Insidious and The Conjuring have also taken the next positions. It is noteworthy that most of the films in this list are modern works made in recent years.
In addition to rating the films, the researchers took a closer look at the horror scenes and their impact on the audience. They found that scenes that started with silence and then followed by the sudden appearance of a scary character or creature were the most effective at instilling fear in the audience. Using loud and sudden sounds also helps to strengthen this effect.
The list of 20 horror movies based on this research is as follows:
