Google has announced that the Mobile First Indexing project, which started about seven years ago, has now been completed.
As a reminder, we must say that Google started this project more than 6.5 years ago and has now completed it. Google first introduced the mobile-first index in November 2016, and by December 2018, half of the websites in Google’s search results were mobile-first indexed. Mobile First Index means that Google sees your website through the eyes of a mobile browser and therefore uses the mobile version of your website for indexing and ranking.
Google announced the deadline for websites to switch to mobile indexing in early March 2020. Google then extended that deadline again in July 2020 until March 2021.
Google has said that there are very few sites that don’t work at all on mobile phones, and these are problems that the company can’t fix.
