Archaeologists in Ecuador discovered a strange burial in which ancient babies were buried with helmets made from the skulls of older children.
An archeological research team on the coast of Ecuador has made a shocking discovery that shows that babies were buried around two thousand years ago with helmets made from children’s skulls. This discovery was made in the ancient site of Salango.
The research team found the remains of two babies, with the upper part of the skull of another baby placed on their heads like a hat. These burials belong to the Guangala culture, who lived in this area about a hundred years before Christ. Researchers say this is the first time such a head covering has been seen in the world’s archaeological record.
The mystery of strange burials with children’s skulls in the Guangala civilization

According to archaeologists’ research, these hats were cut in such a way that they fit snugly and accurately on the babies’ heads. The strange thing is that the outer skulls belonged to children who were buried a little older than babies.
Scientists speculate that this act was a kind of religious ritual to protect the souls of ancient babies in the afterlife. In fact, these skulls probably served as a protective layer to protect babies from demons on the way to eternity.

It is not yet clear whether these children died as a result of being sacrificed or their deaths were natural. However, the evidence points to a social or environmental crisis at the time that led to high infant mortality.
These findings have opened a new window towards understanding the complex and sometimes frightening behaviors of ancient societies in South America. Researchers are now conducting DNA tests to find out the possible relationship between these babies and the children whose skulls were turned into their helmets.
