Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has always been known for making optimistic predictions, but his performance in 2025 showed that many of these predictions were beyond optimism and actually empty promises. Now that 2025 is coming to a close, it’s time to look back at the man who was supposed to take humans to Mars this year, but couldn’t even get his robotic taxis on the streets on schedule. In the following, we will discuss the list of his 6 big promises that failed this year.
1. Human journey to Mars
The year 2025 is over and humans have not yet set foot on Mars. Elon Musk firmly announced at the Recode conference in 2016 that SpaceX will start launching rockets in 2018, and according to the plan, humans will go to space in 2024 and reach Mars in 2025. This promise was the continuation of his famous claim in 2011, when he said that he would send humans to Mars in 10 years. Now 14 years have passed since that claim and we are still not even close to Mars.

2. Tesla’s robotaxis
In July of this year, during Tesla’s Q2 financial report, Elon Musk promised investors that by the end of the year, Tesla’s robot taxis will serve half of the US population. But the reality is completely different; Currently, these taxis are only active in the city of Austin, Texas, and the New York Times reports that even local Austin residents rarely see them. This strange claim was made while its realization was practically impossible, but investors believed it.

3. Robotaxis without human operators
Contrary to repeated promises of masks, Tesla taxis still operate with a human operator present. Musk has promised multiple times throughout the year, including in September and October, that by the end of 2025 safety drivers will be eliminated and cars will drive completely unsupervised. He even claimed in early December that in three weeks, self-driving cars will be driving in Austin. Although promotional videos of driverless tests have been released, reports suggest that regular customers will still encounter safety monitors in the car, and it appears that the change has yet to be widely implemented.

4. Achieving comprehensive artificial intelligence
Last year, Elon Musk claimed on X social network that his company (xAI) will achieve comprehensive artificial intelligence or AGI in 2025; A type of artificial intelligence that can think and reason like a human. But this promise was not fulfilled either. According to new reports, Musk has now changed his mind and says that achieving AGI may take several years.

5. Flying car and new roadster
On Joe Rogan’s podcast, Elon Musk promised to show a demo or prototype of the Tesla Roadster before the end of the year; A car that has been pre-sold since 2017 and has not been released yet. He even vaguely hinted that this product might be able to fly. But the year 2025 ended and there was no news about demo, roadster or flying car. This product has been available for eight years.

6. Saving $2 trillion with DOGE
After the election, Musk headed a new agency called the Office of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, and promised to eliminate $2 trillion in government spending that goes to “waste and fraud.” This figure was first reduced to one trillion dollars and then to hundreds of billions of dollars.

New analyzes from the CATO Institute show that not only have no savings been made, but federal government spending in the first 11 months of 2025 has increased by about $248 billion compared to the previous year. Many of the claims of this institution about frauds were denied and his actions in reducing foreign budgets have only led to human problems.
