In its latest action, OpenAI has announced that the capability Voiceone of the key features of ChatGPT, will soon be unavailable on macOS. This decision particularly affects users who depend on voice interaction in the Mac version of the tool.
According to reports, OpenAI has emphasized that this move does not mark the end of Voice functionality, but is part of a deep structural change to redefine the voice experience in the ChatGPT ecosystem; A change that currently reduces the access of some users, but is considered logical and purposeful in the direction of the company’s macro-planning for the development of voice interactions.
Removing the Voice feature in the Mac version of ChatGPT
According to the release notes of the latest update of the ChatGPT app for Mac, the Voice feature will be officially disabled on the macOS desktop version starting January 15, 2026 (December 25). OpenAI sees this decision as an opportunity to realign its focus on developing more advanced and coordinated voice experiences across the ChatGPT ecosystem. It is also emphasized that this change is only limited to the voice interaction section and other features of ChatGPT in macOS will remain available to users without any disruption or limitation.

At the same time as announcing this change, OpenAI has emphasized that the Voice feature will continue to be active on other platforms and no restrictions have been considered for them. Users can use the voice chat without interruption in the web version of ChatGPT as well as in iOS, Android and Windows operating systems.
Although the discontinuation of Voice functionality in the MacOS version may initially be seen as a limitation, evidence suggests that this decision is temporary. Voice interfaces have quickly become one of the most important ways for users to interact with AI, and removing them permanently does not align with OpenAI’s future goals. Especially considering the possible role of voice interaction in the company’s new hardware products, completely stopping this feature does not seem logical and sustainable.
It seems that OpenAI is probably rebuilding the Voice infrastructure, and the current version of this feature on macOS is not compatible with the new architecture. Therefore, users should note that until December 25th, it is possible to use Voice in the Mac application, but after that, the only way to have a voice conversation with ChatGPT will be to use the web version or the iOS and iPadOS operating systems.
