Carbon Trust Assurance has issued the first official carbon footpri reduction certification for some Samsung washing machines.
Samsung Electronics announced the official approval of the Carbon Trust Assurance Institute for the effectiveness of AI Energy’s capability in reducing carbon emissions; A feature that has been used in some selected models of washing machines of this company and has been able to significaly reduce the amou of carbon emissions during the use of the devices.
This approval is based on a new standard called “Carbon reduction during the use phase of connected devices” (DUCD); A benchmark that is dedicated to evaluating a product or feature for the first time, and its importance lies in proving the measurable role of Samsung’s AI Energy Mode in reducing greenhouse gas emissions during consumer use, which has been verified by an independe, third-party eity.
Jung Seongmun, the executive vice preside and manager of the research and developme team of Samsung’s digital home appliances departme, referring to the company’s environmeal approach, stated that Samsung has always combined the design of its products and services with environmeal considerations, and considered the AI Energy capability as a clear example of this policy; According to him, with the official confirmation of the effectiveness of this feature, Samsung plans to pursue the improveme of its products, features and services more seriously at the stage of actual use by consumers.
Samsung’s coinuous efforts to reduce carbon footpri
Samsung had previously focused on developing objective indicators to measure and manage the amou of carbon emissions in home appliances, and in this coext, it joined the DUCD initiative as a member of the secretariat in September 2022 to play an active role in the developme of this standard.
The DUCD initiative is implemeed under the leadership of the Carbon Trust, an iernational advisory body active in the field of climate change; An institution that seeks to advance effective measures in climate protection in cooperation with companies, governmes and financial institutions, and its goal is to standardize the methods of measuring energy consumption and the amou of savings obtained from connected devices, as well as creating global frameworks for calculating the reduction of carbon emissions in devices connected to Wi-Fi.
The initiative published its global profile in November 2024; A docume that defines iegrated criteria for measuring and methods of reducing carbon emissions in connected devices and offers a differe approach from the common methods based on the production phase by focusing on measuring emission reductions in the phase of actual use by the consumer.
Confirmation of carbon emission reduction through AI Energy mode
Based on these guidelines, Carbon Trust’s independe assurance and validation unit called Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd conducted a global test evaluation on a set of Samsung washing machines, during which the effectiveness of AI Energy’s ability to reduce carbon emissions was measured and confirmed by comparing the amou of carbon produced in the period of July 2024 to June 2025 when this ability is active and when it is not used.
In this time period, the total energy consumption of some selected Samsung low-consumption washing machines when using the SmartThings platform reached 12.28 GWh, which is estimated to be equivale to the release of 5266 tons of carbon dioxide; Statistics that show that of this amou, 5.02 gigawatt hours of energy saving and the reduction of 2084 tons of carbon dioxide equivale (CO₂e) were directly the result of AI Energy being active.
