An American startup called 2Wai claims to have created an application that uses artificial intelligence to create digital versions of people, even those who are no longer alive. This news caused widespread reactions in the media and social networks and led to serious discussions about ethics and the future of technology.
The 2Wai app was released in beta form for iOS in November 2025. The show was launched by former Disney actor Calum Worthy and producer Russell Geyser. Its creators claim that with only about three minutes of video, sound and text, a digital version of a person called HoloAvatar can be made. These avatars have the ability to speak in more than forty languages and can interact with the user over time. The company’s stated goal is to create what it calls “digital immortality”; It means the lasting presence of people even after their death.
Advertisements of this application with the slogan “Three minutes can last forever” were published and viewed more than 22 million times. In one of the promotional videos, a pregnant woman talks to a digital version of her deceased mother, and then the same avatar tells a story to her grandson. This advertising narrative tries to show that technology can preserve the memories and presence of loved ones for future generations.
However, reactions to 2Wai have been mostly negative. Many users and experts have compared this technology to an episode of Black Mirror and considered it “scary” or “inhuman”. Critics have warned that such tools could be seen as exploiting the feelings of survivors and raise serious questions about privacy, individual rights and mental health. Instead, the creators emphasize that they aim to create a “living archive of humanity” to preserve memories and stories for future generations.
