A new court ruling could destroy the $20 billion Google-Apple deal. Is Google’s reign as the iPhone’s default search engine over?
The world of technology is in shock; Judge Amit Mehta, who previously ruled Google an illegal monopoly, is now considering fines that could change the structure of the iPhone forever. The most important casualty of this ruling is the confidentiality agreement that made Google the default search engine for the iPhone.
According to reports, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) wants to end Google’s massive payments to companies like Apple. Google pays Apple about $20 billion a year to own the Safari search bar. If the judge approves the request, Apple will not only lose a huge windfall, but will also be forced to make fundamental changes to the iOS operating system.
Users’ hands are opened to choose the search engine on the iPhone!

The biggest change coming is the possible addition of a “selection page”. If this happens, users will have to choose between Google, Bing, DocDocGo, or even ChatGPT when starting up a new iPhone or opening Safari.
This means that Google can no longer guarantee its position with money and must fight to be selected. On the other hand, Apple, which has benefited from this monopoly for years, is now facing the challenge of declining service revenue. Some analysts believe that this “story twist” may even force Apple to launch its own AI-based search engine sooner rather than later.
