Vibe coding was first used in February this year by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former head of artificial intelligence at Tesla, in a post on the X social network. Karpati wrote at the time: “There is a new type of coding that I call Vibe-coding; “Where you completely surrender to the vibe… and forget the code even exists.” He added that the ability to generate programs this way is possible because large language models have become too good.
Choosing Vibe-coding as the dictionary word of the year
Collins dictionary, which has a history of 200 years and is now published by Harper Collins, classified the term Vibe-coding as a noun and a slang term. The official definition given by Collins is: “The use of artificial intelligence guided by natural language to help write computer code.”
Since the term was coined, Vibe-coding has become more than just a buzzword in tech circles, it’s now a skill that pays significant salaries. Over the past year, this approach has become the standard for coders, both experienced and novice, to build new applications.
The success of this approach in attracting huge funds for startups active in this field is also evident. Companies building Vibe-coding-based platforms have recently attracted major funding from Silicon Valley’s top investors; For example, Replit raised $250 million in September this year, and Vercel raised $300 million in the same September.
