A 10-year-old girl stumbled across five prehistoric dinosaur footpris while walking with her mother on the beach in Wales. Experts believe that these footpris belong to a Camelotia dinosaur; A little-known herbivore from the Late Triassic.
These huge footpris are about 76 cm apart and are lined up in an orderly and uniform fashion, indicating that they were most likely left by a dinosaur.
Teigen, a 10-year-old girl, was on holiday with her mother Claire on the South Wales coast around the Vale of Glamorgan, which is known as one of the hotspots for prehistoric discoveries. However, the discovery of five large footpris was completely unexpected for them.
“It was very exciting,” Teigen told the BBC. We were just out for fun to see what we could find. We didn’t think we would find anything. At first we thought they were just pits in the sand, but they looked like dinosaur footpris. “My mom took some pictures, se them to the museum, and then we found out that it was a long-necked dinosaur.”
Teigen’s mother Claire forwarded the email to the National Museum of Wales, where curator of palaeoology Sandy Howells works. “These footpris are so large that they can only belong to a type of sauropodomorpha dinosaur,” Howells told the BBC’s The Dinohuers.
More precisely, experts speculate that these footpris belong to a species of sauropodomorph called Camelotia; A herbivorous dinosaur from the late Triassic period. This dinosaur is known for its long neck, bulky body, long tail and small head. It is said that the height of this animal was about 3 meters and its length was about 5 meters. According to research, this dinosaur sometimes walked only on its hind legs and at other times used all four limbs to move.
The red silty cliffs at Lavernock Poi, between Cardiff and Barry, are famous for their prehistoric fossils. During the last ceury, dinosaur footpris have been discovered many times in this area. In 2014, on the same beach and near the curre location, two brothers found a complete skeleton of a dinosaur named Dracoraptor.
Howells coinued: “Uil a few years ago, we had very few dinosaur discoveries in Wales and thought that this area had little to coribute to dinosaur history. But now every 5 to 6 years we find a new footpri or bone. We now know that dinosaurs lived in Wales for about 15 million years. It’s really amazing.”
The first sign that convinced the experts that this discovery was related to a dinosaur was the regular pattern of footpris. Howells explained: “There is a fixed distance between the five footpris; So that a left foot is seen, then right, left again and finally right. This order shows that it belongs to a large four-legged animal.
“This discovery is really importa,” Howells added. It’s an exciting feeling when someone calls us with the confidence of discovering a real dinosaur footpri. It’s amazing.”
For Teigen and her mother, Claire, that day at the beach was an unforgettable experience; A trip that was supposed to be just a simple walk, but led to the discovery of historical fossils. “It’s hard to fathom that you’re walking on the same beach that hundreds of millions of years ago, prehistoric animals walked on,” Keller said. “A lot of people spend their whole lives looking for dinosaur fossils, and for Teigen to have a discovery like this at this age is really amazing.”
