Ranking all films of “Summon”; From the worst to the best

When “Summary” (2013) arrived, the horror genre is in one of its underprivileged periods; The days when the cinema was filled with stereotypical, repetitive, and morals. James Van, with his exemplary skill in the game with rhythm, sound, shadow and light, showed that fear can still be “narrative” in its essence; Something that should be born from personality and space, not from cinematic tricks and successive jumps. “Summon”, with the tempting phrase “based on a real story,” was able to bring the audience lost to the genre. The cinematic world of “summoning” is not perfect, no matter how brilliant and breathtaking works are filled with, it is filled with inappropriate, poor and “waste” projects. On the occasion of the release of “Summon 4: The Last Ceremony” that completed the Arc of Ed and Loren Warren, we have taken a look at one of the most influential contemporary scary cinema franchises.

10- Annabelle (Annabelle)

After the astonishing success of the first part of “Summon”, the next step of this cinematic world was not exactly what fans were expecting. Instead of a direct, well -made sequence, the Warner Brothers decided to make Spin -efficiently creating the character of Annabel – or the same scary doll. Annable’s adventures take place a year before the “summoning” events, and the story of a couple named Mia (Annabel Wallis) and John (Ward Horton) and their baby Lia; A family conquered by an evil creature emitted from the same old doll.

Annabel was Warner’s first attempt to expand the franchise, but their questionable approach took the film to disgust. They made two mistakes: The first was the absence of the Warren. Leonti is a good cameraman and had a brilliant performance in “Summon”, but his directing history was almost awful. He had made one of the worst cinematic adaptations of video games with Mortal Kombat (1997), and his sequel to “Butterfly” was a disaster. Despite these failures, he was constructed by Anabel to show again that he had little talent in filmmaking.

Leonti’s lack of creativity and inability to manage fictional elements and build a coherent work is clearly visible in Annabel. Compared to “summoning”, Anabel was a crucial and formulating work that was more likely to hurt television than the big cinema. Leonti also causes the other weaknesses of the film: Highly weak players (with the exception of Alphari Vodard) and his jumpers are often unintentionally laughing. Annabel has a few effective moments, including the final shot but a sloping and ridiculous film that can firmly be the worst film in this cinematic world.

“Curse Liveona” is not one of the official films in the world of “summoning”, but during the release, Warner tried to stick the film in every way. In addition, references and signs cannot be ignored. The film was made by Michael Chavez, who later became the main leader of the series, making the next two films “Summon” as well as “Nuns 2”. Tony Amandula once again plays the role of Perez’s father (one of the main characters in the film “Annabel”), and in the story, Warren also refers to the Warren. It was a brief presence in Summon 2, but it was enough to conquer the audience’s heart. He was undoubtedly the best option for a sub -version, but unfortunately the “nun” makes all his steps wrong. The adventures begin with the sister of Irin (Tisa Farmiga) and the father of Burke (Damian Bicheir). The Vatican sends the two to Romania to investigate the suspicious killings of a remote monastery; Where the invisible creature has the nuns one by one. This initial idea on paper had the potential to become a scary Gothic legend.

The nun is a more respected effort than Anabel. The film has a special visual style and, with the help of lighting and coloring, creates a cold atmosphere that is in line with the story environment. There are a few good scary scenes in the film that revolve around Wallock. However, the “nun” has some major drawbacks that make it a boring experience. The rhythm of the film is extremely slow, and the way the film wants to scare us is both stereotyped and often has nothing to do with the evil of the story. The characters are also superficial and they are abundant dialogues. In other words, the film has no energy and dramatic stretching, and watching it is overwhelming.

We expect the film to be a strong and scary devil to have a strong presence in the story, but Wallock is only in the final 10 minutes of the film; And, of course, this was not what the teasers and posters of the movie had promised. In addition, the film, with additional explanations, will destroy the exciting mystery that had made “summoning 2” so great. The nun has proven to everyone that “summoning” is one of the most contradictory franchises in the scary genre. Critics and fans gave the “nun” to the lowest privileges, but given its astonishing sales, there was no reason for Warner to release it. On the other hand, Wallock is truly evil evil, and its Gothic aesthetics is enough to distinguish this crowded franchise. Warner assigned the second part of Michael Chavez, who was “summoned: the devil forced me”, and Warner hoped to make “Nun 2” a better work. But what happened? Was there any progress?

Summon: The Last Ceremony is a more coherent film than Michael Chavez’s previous film, but it cannot be considered a step forward. Chavez has clearly decided to stay in James Van’s orbit and is now trying to reproduce it with minimal change. At first glance, he takes the right path: The film has many appearances to the first two, but with a careful look at his insufficiency; Here’s no brilliant and calculated rhythm or that brilliant suspension of James One versions. The film, however, pursues a more emotional goal: a magnificent farewell to Warren. However, do not forget that we haven’t gone to the “Last Ceremony” to watch a scratch drama, we want to watch a terrible movie and this movie is by no means scary.

The last ceremony »is the same as the familiar formula of the collection; Two parallel narratives that are supposed to come together: Warren on one side, and a family conquered on the other. This structure was great in the hands of James Van. But in the Chavez version, it has come out of the water. In the second half of the film, things are getting worse, and as we are waiting for the peak of this franchise, we are confronted with a high degree of “summoning”. When the Warren realizes that there is no time in the story, they enter a dark, scary journey to discover the truth.

The film never approaches the quality of the first two parts, but it takes a few bold steps and departs from the franchise’s established rules, which helps to provide an experience that you will not find elsewhere. For example, the rhythm and structure of the film are quite different. Usually the “summoning” is slowly starting and gradually moving towards the entry of Warren into the house of the family involved. In this film, the wheels are with the family from the beginning, and then try to prove Arn’s innocence, because the devil has forced him to kill an innocent man. The third episode has a fast rhythm, the fears come together and we have a few stressful scenes, especially the Forensic Refrigerator Sequence, which is one of the highlights of the film.

These are memorable, but Wallock should be the culmination of the film. The nun, with that brilliant makeup and the powerful game of Bonnie Arons, has made the film a more scary work. The evil of the first film was more focused on the Peron family, but here, Wallock is working with the Warren itself. Instead of being like heroic experts, they look much more vulnerable, and that affects film fears. Summon 2 may not have the cultural impact of the first part, but it upgrades what has been done before, and the film is far more scary.
