It was in 2017 that Elon Musk raised the issue of changing to a profitable model; Elon Musk had claimed that year that the non-profit structure could not meet the financial and technological needs of OpenAI.
In the same years, Musk was trying to have full corol over the new proposed eity; This complete corol included the acquisition of the majority of shares and the chairmanship of the board of directors and the executive director, which faced strong opposition from OpenAI managers, including Sam Altman; These differences eveually led to Musk’s departure from the board in 2018.
Finally, in 2019, OpenAI officially announced that it would coinue with a limited-profit model with oversight by a non-profit eity to raise the capital it needs to compete in the AI industry.
