After Elon Musk, Meta is the latest oppone of turning OpenAI io a for-profit company. In a letter to California Attorney General Rob Boa, the company has asked to stop the process of converting OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit eity.
OpenAI, the maker of the ChatGPT chatbot, was founded in 2015 as a non-profit foundation. But “Sam Altman”, the CEO of OpenAI, has recely requested to change the company’s status from non-profit to for-profit. This request was initially met with strong opposition from Elon Musk, one of the co-founders of OpenAI. But OpenAI recely leaked emails that show Musk has been in favor of making the company profitable in the past.

But Meta has also apparely joined the jirga of oppones of OpenAI’s commercialization. According to the Wall Street Journal, in a rece letter to the California Attorney General, the company told the California Attorney General that OpenAI should not be allowed to break the law by taking the assets it built as a non-profit and use them for poteially large private gains. .
But one of the notable pois of this letter is Meta’s support for Elon Musk’s rece stance on the commercialization of OpenAI. Metta meioned in his letter that Musk is well qualified and well placed to represe the ierests of Californians in this matter.
In response to Meta’s letter, OpenAI CEO Brett Taylor said the company is focused on advancing its mission to benefit humanity with artificial general ielligence (AGI) by fulfilling its fiduciary obligations. Also, Brett Taylor further meioned that any possible restructuring can ensure that the non-profit OpenAI Foundation will coinue to grow and will have a higher ability to pursue its missions.
Sam Altman recely said that OpenAI should shed its non-profit structure to become a more attractive option for investors.
Of course, Meta also pursues its ierests in preveing OpenAI from becoming a for-profit company. Mark Zuckerberg is determined to make Meta AI the world’s most used AI assista, a title currely held by ChatGPT.
