Researchers at the University of Texas have been developing an algorithm based on artificial ielligence that can detect an earthquake a week in advance. After many tests, they managed to correctly predict 70% of earthquakes in China. This experime, which was carried out in a period of seven mohs, brought significa results. Using their artificial ielligence model, the researchers were able to correctly ideify 14 earthquakes within 200 miles of the expected location and estimate their iensity with considerable accuracy. Also, this algorithm missed the occurrence of one earthquake and the report of eight earthquakes was also wrong.
This algorithm is developed using machine learning technology; The process by which a computer program goes through its training process using the data and information provided to it. To train this model, researchers have collected five years of seismic data and provided it to their algorithm. Such an approach has not yet been tested elsewhere; But it is expected that by training this model based on more big data, its accuracy will increase to a great exte.
Sergey Fomel, a member of the research team at the University of Texas, said: “We are still not close to fully predicting earthquakes anywhere in the world; But what we have obtained from our rece research shows us that what we thought was impossible uil today is completely achievable. Even considering the curre 70% accuracy, the result is very remarkable. “This technology can play an importa role in reducing economic losses and loss of life, and has the poteial to significaly improve public preparedness against earthquakes.”
