Russia’s warning about the deployment of nuclear weapons in Estonia – Mehr News agency RCO News Agency
According to the Mehr News Agency, quoted by RIA Novosti, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: Russia does not threaten Estonia or any other European country.
At the same time, he added: If nuclear weapons are deployed in Estonia, countermeasures will be taken.
The Kremlin spokesman said: “Moscow will always do whatever is necessary to ensure its security, especially in the field of nuclear deterrence.”
Relations between Estonia and Russia have been mostly tense and distrustful for the past three decades. After the independence of Estonia in 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union, one of the axes of dispute was the issues related to borders, the status of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia and the historical interpretation of the period of Soviet occupation.
When Estonia joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union in 2004, the geopolitical distance between the two countries increased. After the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014, and especially with the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, Tallinn has been one of the staunchest supporters of Kiev in Europe and has pursued stricter sanctions against Moscow.
