Lebanon’s decision to hand over 300 Syrian prisoners to their country – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Turkey’s Anatolia, this action is based on a bilateral agreement between Syria and Lebanon and includes prisoners who have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment.
Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Metri, in response to reporters’ questions after the meeting of the government delegation at the Lebanese presidential headquarters in Baabda, said that these prisoners can spend the rest of their sentences in their country.
He added that the agreement includes people who have been in Lebanese prisons for more than 10 years.
The prisoner transfer agreement between Damascus and Beirut has been discussed and exchanged since October 2025, and its purpose is to return prisoners not accused of murder and manage pending cases between the two countries.
According to official statistics, about 2,500 Syrian citizens are detained in Lebanese prisons, which make up almost a third of the total number of prisoners in this country.
