South Africa’s request to hold a Security Council meeting on Venezuela
Condemning the US military action against Venezuela and arresting the country’s president, the South African government considered it a clear violation of the UN Charter and called for an urgent meeting of the Security Council.
According to Isna, the South African government announced on Saturday that it is deeply concerned about the “military attack” carried out by the United States of America against Venezuela and the arrest of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife.
The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa emphasized in a statement that the actions of the United States are a clear violation of the United Nations Charter; A charter that requires all member states to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country.
This statement states that the UN Charter does not issue any authorization for foreign military intervention in matters that are essentially within the internal jurisdiction of a sovereign state.
South Africa warned that historical experience has repeatedly shown that military invasion of independent countries only leads to instability and escalation of crises.
The ministry stated: “The illegal and unilateral use of force undermines the stability of the international order and the principle of equality among nations.” Accordingly, South Africa asks the UN Security Council to urgently hold a meeting to review the developments in Venezuela.
According to reports, US military forces launched a series of attacks against Venezuela on Saturday morning, during which Nicolás Maduro and his wife were arrested and left the country.
The US Attorney General has announced that Maduro will be tried in the US.
This military action against the South American country has faced widespread international reactions, and a number of countries have demanded a global coordinated response and action against it.
