American officials: the international force in Gaza will not fight Hamas
Two U.S. officials said international forces could be deployed to the Gaza Strip as early as next month to form a UN-sanctioned stabilization force, but it was not clear how Hamas would be disarmed.
According to RCO News Agency, these two American officials, who asked to remain anonymous, also said that the international stabilization force will not fight Hamas.
According to Reuters News agency, they further stated that many countries have expressed interest in participating in this stabilization force, and US officials are currently reviewing the size, composition, location, training and rules of engagement of these forces.
The US Central Command is scheduled to host a conference in Doha on December 16 with the presence of partner countries in order to plan for these international stabilization forces for Gaza, informed officials said.
More than 25 countries are going to send their delegations and representatives to participate in the conference, which will include meetings about the command structure and other issues related to the Gaza Stabilization Force.
A two-star U.S. general is being considered to lead Gaza’s security forces, officials said, but no decision has yet been made.
The deployment of this force is a key part of the next phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt told reporters on Thursday: “There’s a lot of quiet planning going on behind the scenes right now for the second phase of the peace deal. We want the continuation of lasting peace.”
In the meantime, Indonesia has said that it is ready to deploy 20,000 troops to take over health and construction tasks in Gaza.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Defense of this country said: “It is still in the stages of planning and preparation. “We are now preparing the organizational structure of the forces that are to be deployed.”
The Security Council authorized the International Stabilization Force in Gaza to work alongside the newly trained and certified Palestinian police to stabilize security “by ensuring the demilitarization process of the Gaza Strip, including the destruction and prevention of reconstruction of military, terrorist and offensive infrastructure, as well as the permanent destruction of weapons of non-state armed groups.”
