Orban: The European Union is drowning in corruption
Accusing Brussels and Kyiv of shielding each other from corruption scandals, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the European Union still claims the “moral high ground” despite being “drenched” in corruption.
According to RCO News Agency, Orban then attacked the leadership of the European Union by referring to the latest corruption scandal that engulfed the union earlier this week.
According to the Rashatoudi News channel, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office officially accused three main suspects, including “Federica Mogherini”, the former head of foreign policy of this union and the vice president of the European Union Commission, of fraud, corruption, conflict of interest and violation of professional secrets.
The Hungarian prime minister compared the incident to a series of corruption scandals that have hit Ukraine, including a $100 million bribery scheme linked to Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle.
Despite this scandal, Brussels has sought to provide 135 billion euros to support Kyiv over the next year.
Orban went on to accuse the EU leadership of covering up corruption in Kiev, saying that Brussels failed to provide an adequate response to the corruption scandal in Ukraine.
In a message on X social network (Twitter), he wrote: “The European Union is drowned in corruption.” Commission members are facing serious charges, the Commission and Parliament are embroiled in scandal, yet Brussels still claims moral superiority. Corruption in Ukraine should be revealed by the European Union, but once again the same old story is repeated; Instead of facing the truth, Brussels and Kyiv have shielded each other.
His comments came after the recent statements of “Peter Siarto”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, who accused the European Union of not wanting to expose Ukraine’s corruption and said, “Brussels is also involved in a similar corruption network.”
“After it became clear that there was corruption at the highest level of government in Ukraine, no one asked the Ukrainians to explain the hundreds of billions of euros in EU aid,” Siarto told reporters.
He added that European taxpayers’ money ends up in the “hands of a war mafia”.
Russia has made a similar comment about the EU’s willingness to continue sending aid to Ukraine despite frequent corruption and bribery in the country.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that EU officials may themselves benefit from corruption in Ukraine.
