Russia and India: Iran’s nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue

According to Isna, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the commitment of the two countries to develop a strategic partnership based on trust and mutual respect and cooperation in regional and international issues, especially the situation in the West Asian region, during the 20th meeting of the heads of the two countries.

In a joint statement issued by the Kremlin on Friday, the two sides called for “self-restraint and respect for human rights in the Middle East” and emphasized “supporting civilians and strengthening peace efforts” in light of growing concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Also, the parties emphasized adherence to “peace and stability in the Middle East” and “avoiding any action leading to escalation of tension and threat to regional stability”.

Russia and India agreed to expand cooperation in countering common threats including “terrorism, extremism, transnational organized crime, money laundering, terrorist financing and drug trafficking”.

They also emphasized the importance of dialogue regarding the resolution of Iran’s nuclear program and the necessity of supporting global stability in the context of the world’s move towards multipolarization.

The joint statement of the heads of India and Russia emphasized the continuation of cooperation within the framework of the “BRICS”, “Shanghai Cooperation Organization” and “G20” groups; Cooperation that includes reforming multilateralism, revising international economic governance institutions, multilateral development banks, and strengthening the achievement of sustainable development goals in economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

The two sides also emphasized on “increasing economic growth, sustainability of supply chains, adherence to free and fair trade and dealing with climate change”.

In the context of UN reforms, Russia and India called for a “comprehensive reform of the Security Council” and Moscow once again supported New Delhi’s candidacy for a permanent seat in the Council.

They also pointed to the “increasing role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in building a multipolar, representative, democratic and just world system based on the principles of international law and civilizational diversity.”

After today’s negotiations in New Delhi, the Russian President emphasized that “Russia and India are now pursuing independent foreign policies in cooperation with the BRICS countries and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and are advancing the process of building a more just and democratic multipolar world system, and adhere to the fundamental principles of international law contained in the United Nations Charter.”

Putin added that the talks between the two sides included a comprehensive review of the dimensions of cooperation between Russia and India and described the package of signed agreements as “strong”. He also thanked Modi for his warm welcome and called the talks “useful and constructive”.
