Guterres’ reaction to US actions against Venezuela
The Secretary General of the United Nations said that this organization considers the US attacks in the Caribbean and actions against Venezuela to be against international law.
According to RCO News Agency, “Antonio Guterres”, the Secretary General of the United Nations, said on Wednesday evening, referring to the military and tension-causing activities of the United States in the Caribbean: “The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has clearly stated that international laws are not compatible with this type of attack.”
According to the Sputnik News agency, Guterres further emphasized: “Therefore, my serious request is to avoid a confrontational situation in the Caribbean; A situation that could have much more serious consequences than the attacks that are happening now.”
Tensions between Washington and Caracas have escalated in recent months, and the United States has carried out numerous military and security operations in the Caribbean and around Venezuela.
Earlier, Western media reported citing people who were involved in the negotiations of the US President Donald Trump’s administration regarding a possible attack on Venezuela: “The primary targets could be drug-related facilities, including production or storage facilities used by Colombian cartels that transport cocaine through Venezuela.”
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has repeatedly mentioned that the increase in US military presence in the region is aimed at “overthrow” him.
In August, Washington doubled the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, accusing him of “connections to drug traffickers and criminal gangs”; A charge that Maduro has denied.
Ukraine war
Referring to the war in Ukraine, the Secretary General of the United Nations said at a meeting titled “Reuters Next 2025” that “Russia and Ukraine are still far from a peaceful solution to this military conflict.”
“An agreement has been reached with Russia, then an agreement has been reached with Ukraine,” Guterres emphasized. “The 2 are not compatible, then they go back to Russia and then, frankly, I believe we’re still a long way from a solution.”
He added: “The issue of the future of Donbass has been a key issue in the peace settlement because Russia is seeking official recognition of the entire region as Russia, while Ukraine has demanded a ceasefire along the current contact lines before starting negotiations on this issue.”
