Maduro’s warning about America’s intentions
The President of Venezuela said that the US government intends to seize Venezuela’s huge oil reserves through lethal military force against the country’s soil, people and institutions.
According to Isna, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro wrote in a letter addressed to the Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting countries (OPEC) on Sunday evening: “I am writing this letter to address the increasing and illegal threats of the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”
Maduro continued this letter: “As you have surely seen, since the middle of August this year, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has launched a campaign of harassment and threats against Venezuela, which clearly endangers national and international peace, security and stability.” As part of this campaign, various US military assets have been deployed to the Caribbean region, including more than 14 warships and 15,000 personnel. In addition, US authorities have conducted more than 20 airstrikes against small groups.”
Regarding the hostile actions and military movements of the US President, the Venezuelan President said: “Similarly, during these months, there have been repeated and continuous threats of the use of force against the Venezuelan territory by the United States authorities, which clearly violate the United Nations Charter and other international law instruments.”
He stated: “Venezuela officially declares against OPEC and the OPEC+ mechanism that the United States government intends to seize Venezuela’s huge oil reserves, the largest oil reserves on the planet, through the use of lethal military force against the country’s soil, people and institutions.”
Nicolás Maduro emphasized: “This intention is not only contrary to the provisions governing peaceful coexistence between nations, but also seriously endangers the stability of Venezuela’s oil production and the international market.” The world is well aware of the destructive consequences of military interventions by the United States of America and its allies in other oil-producing countries. “Venezuela will remain steadfast in defending its energy resources and will not give in to any kind of pressure.”
At the end of this letter, he noted: “Members of OPEC and OPEC+, I hope to count on your efforts to help stop this aggression that is becoming stronger day by day and seriously threatens the balance of the international energy market, both for producing and consuming countries. “Finally, I respectfully request that a copy of this letter be distributed among the member countries of our organization and the OPEC+ mechanism, and that you demand unity of sovereignty without foreign interference.”
On Saturday, Donald Trump asked all airlines, pilots, as well as drug and human traffickers to “consider the airspace over Venezuela and its surrounding areas closed.”
The release of this message took place in a situation where tensions between Washington and Caracas have intensified in recent months and the United States has carried out numerous military and security operations in the Caribbean and around Venezuela.
After this message, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying: “This is a new, extreme, illegal and unjustified aggression against the Venezuelan people.”
Nicolás Maduro has repeatedly pointed out that the increase in US military presence in the region is aimed at his “overthrow” and has rejected the US accusation of “connections with drug traffickers and criminal groups”.
