Continuation of the prison escape series in France
Two French prisoners escaped from prison by cutting the bars of their cell and using their sheets.
According to Isna, a French prosecutor announced today (Thursday) that two prisoners in a prison in the east of the country sawed the bars of their cells and escaped at night using sheets. This is the second such incident in recent weeks.
France’s prisons agency also said guards noticed two inmates had escaped from a prison in the city of Dijon shortly before sunrise, but did not elaborate on how exactly they escaped.
“It appears that the two men sawed off the bars and escaped using a sheet,” said Dijon prosecutor Olivier Carracot, without elaborating on how they did it.
Karakot also explained: The fugitives include a 19-year-old man who has been in pre-trial detention since October 2024 for attempted murder in a drug-related case, and a 32-year-old man who has been in prison since 2023 for threats and violence against his partner.
According to the report of AFP, this prison escape occurred 10 days after another escape in the city of Rennes in western France.
He, who is a 37-year-old convict, was supposed to be in prison until early 2027 for the crime of theft, but he escaped to the city skyline while walking with other prisoners.
It is not yet clear if he has been arrested.
“Jerald Darmanin”, the Minister of Justice of the prison, fired the director of the prison after this incident.
According to a Council of Europe report published in July, France has one of the worst prison population densities in Europe and the third worst prison situation behind Slovenia and Cyprus.
In early October, French prisons housed 135 inmates for every 100 available vacancies.
In another incident that recently caught the attention of the whole world in France, some thieves stole precious jewels from the Louvre Museum.
